Charles Darwin once stated that only the "fittest" survive. Luckily our society has redefined what "fit" means. Laws such as IDEA, and the ADA are opening up more social, educational, and occupational opportunities.

Society has long held myths that people with disabilities are asexual. Peopole have spread old ways of thinking throughout our society. They have even gotten many of us to believe it. EVERYONE is sexual in his or her own way. Regardless of our disabilities, everyone deserves to have a boyfriend, girlfriend, spouse, or lover.

Along with the right to be sexual, people with disabilities also have the right to choose when NOT to engage in such activities. Any unwanted sexual touch is assault - and is AGAINST THE LAW. To find out more about sexual assault, its affects, how to protect yourself, and what to do if you are assaulted, please check these links.

While the above links are great there seems to be a great lack of information on abuse of the disabled. As a peer educator on sexual assault prevention on my campus, I have found that sexual assault is a topic that dosn't get as much attention as it needs. When you add a disabilty to the mix, there is even less conversation. This is just one of the reasons that I have started doing presentations on the subject. For more information on on this topic, look at my presentatation notes. At the present time they are somewhat unorganized, but the information is till good. I am currently in the process of reorganizing and updating my notes for a program in June of 1998.

A few important thoughts from the author of this page

Heterosexual or homosexual, is time to break down the myths in our society. It is time to re-educate. They have kept us alive. Now its time to go out and LIVE!
